Don’t forget: Effective Dec. 2, 2024, the following crisis providers must enroll in and be approved by DMAS to continue to offer these services and be paid by DMAS and its contractors:
These requirements were issued by the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) and the Department of Behavioral Health and Development Services (DBHDS) to help lessen administrative burden so providers can focus on patient care and research.
Get up to speed on enrolling in the portal for the first time or re-enrolling, reinstating crisis services specialties and requesting a retroactive effective date.
1. To enroll, re-enroll in the Provider Portal and/or reactivate your 14-digit Provider Location ID: Visit the new enrollment page of Virginia DMAS and select Start. If needed, complete the Enrollment Pre-Checklist on the page to ensure you have the documentation ready to complete enrollment.
If reactivating your Provider Location ID: Answer “yes” to the question “Are you re-enrolling your terminated Service Location ID” and enter your 14-digit Service Location ID.
Note: Follow the steps above if you are a provider with a license and specialty code and need to enroll in the portal for additional licensed sites.
2. To reinstate crisis services specialties: If you’re enrolled in the portal, but missing your DBHDS license and/or a Memorandum of Understanding as your service address in the portal, and have both, take the following steps:
Select Manage My Information and Service Location
Choose Specialties to add the required specialties, and attach the required licensing and documentation
Please review the Virginia Provider User Guide for guidance on adding specialties. Visit the MES Department of Medical Assistant Services website for additional training resources.
3. To request a retroactive effective date: Make a written request at the time of enrollment. If you’ve already enrolled, email your request to Gainwell, the third-party vendor who manages and maintains the DMAS portal.
Retroactive approval is only granted if the provider meets DMAS participation requirements including the proper license and certification.
After enrolling in the provider portal, the managed care organization only pays network providers for dates of service that are within the portal enrollment effective dates.
To verify your enrollment status, download the Provider Extract Spreadsheet on the MCO Provider Network Resources page.
For more information, please email Gainwell or call 1-888-829-5373, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. ET, Monday–Friday.
